Professional Practice – week 1-2

In this class, we are preparing our self promotional package, which is related to our portfolio class.

The first thing we did in this class is to create a mindmap of ourselves:del ltr

We also did some self evaluation and SWOT, both personal and professional SWOT. For week 2, we were assigned to make a SWOT of our worst and best work in UIC and present it along with the two first SWOTs.

Here is the PDF of my presentation and SWOT analysis:

PDI – Week 1-2

These first two weeks, we discussed about the project we will be making with the theme, “Innovation Tradition”. We have to come up with several problems and brainstorm possible solutions for said problem.

After brainstorming 10 possible problems and their correlating solutions, it was narrowed down to three possible concepts:

  1. Under appreciated Batik
  2. Misogyny
  3. Under appreciated / Unknown Traditional Art

The last two were still a little too broad and I was asked to narrow it down a little bit. After some thought, I narrowed the last one to wayang kulit, which was eventually chosen as the topic for my project.

The Problem:

People nowadays are no longer interested in traditional art (Wayang), and are more interested in the cultures of other countries, even if there is a lot of history and interesting stories behind our own traditions.

Possible Solutions:

  • Social Media Campaign – the idea around this is that people view Wayang as something old and boring, so putting it on a platform people are more comfortable with, and with a more modern look, people would be more interested in it and will start talking about it again.
  • Products Based on wayang – This idea is to create a series of products / product that are based on wayang kulit. Basing them on characters and stories used in the traditional play would emphasize its many interesting points and millenials would be more interested in it.
  • Coloring Book – Illustrate the scenes from the famous play and make one of those stress relief coloring books for adults.

At the end, making a product seemed most interesting and after brainstorming with my friends, I decided to do an accessory line featuring wayang. This may start out with simple things like pins, but we’ll see how the project pans out first and then change gears whenever needed.

Strategic Plan and Concept

For this project, I decided to use the keyword noir. Noir by definition is a genre of thriller, detective French films dating back to 1940s – 1950s.  To me, this word invokes the feeling of nostalgia and has a monochrome color.

Here is my creative brief:

The idea of this brand is to bring back big/medium vintage ties. Right now, the modern market is selling skinny ties (which are also considered vintage), which is why the brand is going for a different approach while referencing the ties found in 1940-1950.

Art Direction – Final Words

So for the last week, we presented our works and we got final feedback regarding the final results that we did.

For my final project, the feedback was that there wasn’t enough variation in either the colors or the vector images I used. Only using those three for everything can get pretty redundant and boring. Another thing said was that maybe the tears could be real tears instead of a digitally manipulated one. Other than that, I don’t think there was any more comments.

That was the final week of presentation and I think this class had been quite fun, although at times it was tough and felt demotivating.
