After the interview the week before, I got a clearer understanding of what Samarinda is. It’s tagline sums it up pretty nicely, “Kota Tepian”, meaning, “City by the Sea”. I had a few bigger ideas for this which I then developed. Here are the pictures for my 3 big ideas:
These were made by sketching on Photoshop using my Wacom tablet. After these main ideas were approved, I went on to developing more abstract shapes and renditions of the logo. I also went ahead and thought of how waves would look and incorporate that into the logo design. After 200+ digital renditions and exploration of the logo (which will not be displayed here), I finally came up with a main logo I am okay with. Here, the fonts were still the default font on my Illustrator, Myriad , I didn’t explore the fonts completely yet because I thought the design and layout is more important and choosing a font really depends on the whole look of the logo.
Here, there is more exploration done regarding the typeface. Gabriola is the main typeface for this rendition of logos. For the tagline, I used Avenir Next Ultra Light to contrast the more playful look of Gabriola. This is where I decided to move on to the other things on my checklist, which is:
- Merchandise (3)
After the logo, the concept for the rest was thought through and implemented.
